Guarantee Your Hard Drives Have Been Wiped with VeriDrive 15 May 2021
We are all being encouraged to be less wasteful and to think ‘green’ before we look to throw things away. And, companies are no exception. In order to help our planet’s environmental crisis and begin to combat climate change, we all need to do our bit to reduce, reuse, and recycle.
In the corporate world, businesses can do their bit simply by recycling and repurposing their IT assets and technology when it is deemed ‘useless’ by one department. This is where VeriDrive comes in!
VeriDrive is a hard drive wipe verification software. By using VeriDrive, you will be able to verify that drives and media have been successfully wiped independently. This allows your company to be 100% sure that there are no recoverable traces of data left before handing technology onto another department, branch or company.
It has been estimated that globally we generate around 40 million tons o electronic waste every year. To put it into context, this equates to throwing away 800 laptops every second! Companies are more likely to send their e-waste to landfill rather than make arrangements for it to be collected, reused or recycled. In fact, only 12.5% of e-waste is recycled.
With such a simple solution in data wiping and hard drive wipe verification, it is easy to incorporate recycling and repurposing into your business. And, ultimately, this can end up saving your company more money in the long run, as well as more security over your sensitive data.
Why Do You Need Independent Verification Software?
IT asset deposition can involve complex chains of custom and reporting requirements. This is especially evident when starting, changing, or auditing a disposal process.
With your company’s sensitive data passing through many hands, it is at an increased amount of risk. Therefore, it is essential to verify your data is being wiped correctly.
Many data erasure tools rely on algorithms for verifying that a drive was wiped correctly; however, it is possible that this software has a bug or that the wiping software wasn’t used correctly. Having a separate person use an independently developed tool to prove your data was wiped is an important step in ensuring the integrity of your audit. This is also necessary as part of the NIST 800-88 requirements (WhiteCanyon).
Even if your company is looking to wipe data from retired IT and mobile devices using the market-leading WipeDrive by WhiteCanyon, their other product VeriDrive is still able to verify the success of the wipe.
VeriDrive uses a pattern verification code written by a separate software engineer and, consequently, uses a different algorithm altogether to WipeDrive. This separation between the two products allows you to use both or use VeriDrive to check another wiping tool.
How VeriDrive Works
VeriDrive can scan your drive and examine the bit patterns that were written by the wiping software, making sure the drive no longer contains any traces of recoverable data.
Similar to WipeDrive, VeriDrive is compatible with any x86 architecture, such as Windows, Mac OS X 10.6 and above, and Linux. Quite simply, it allows you to boot, verify and keep an accurate log of your results.
VeriDrive also includes a configuration that allows you to easily and accurately locate drives that were not appropriately wiped through its flexible pattern verification. Through pattern selection, distribution of bytes, fingerprint adjustment, XML logging to a USB drive, and the ability to produce a completion report, VeriDrive makes your company’s goal of verifying your data wipes easy.
